Deploy a Server

#1. Register For an Account

If you haven’t already registered for an account, you should definitely start there - register for an account. You won’t be charged anything but you will need a valid credit card or a PayPal account associated with a valid credit card to finalize your registration.

Heads up: we are serious about keeping our user base free from abuse and fraud, since one bad apple can cause a fair amount of problems. Don’t be surprised if your account is flagged for a quick manual review, which may involve validating your identity. If you’re looking to avoid it, please use a corporate email address if available, and don’t sign up while logged in to a VPN, etc.

#2. Generate and Upload an SSH Key

Before you can connect to your server you’ll need to generate an SSH key from a command line on your local machine. If you’re on Windows, you would need to use something like Putty in order to generate the SSH keys and also connect to your servers (you can download Putty here).  For more help with generating SSH keys, check out this guide.

To generate the key type this command:

ssh-keygen -t rsa

You’ll be prompted with:

Enter file in which to save the key (~/.ssh/id_rsa):

It’s fine to use the default name and location if you’re generating your key for the first time, we’ll be using the default name here. Next you’ll be prompted with:

Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):

It’s completely up to you but normally with this use case an SSH key is not associated with a password.

You’ll need to upload the public part of your key to Packet. You can copy your key from the command line after running:

cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub

Open the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the customer portal and choose the "SSH Keys" option under "Your Account". Then choose "Add Key," again in the upper right. Give your key a title, and past your public key into  the appropriate field.

#3. Create a Project

Before you can provision a server you’ll need to create a project. A project allows you to organize groups of servers and collaborators. To create a project open the drop-down in the upper right and choose "Settings -> Projects". The portal should guide you from there.

#4. Deploy a Server

Now that you have your project navigate to your projects homepage (upper left) to deploy your first bare metal server. The portal will guide you but you should probably have a look at the pricing structure if haven’t already.

#5. Connect To Your Server

Connecting to your server requires an SSH client; generally, that means using a command line like Terminal for macOS but you can also download an SSH tool of your choice, i.e. PuTTY for Windows. First, grab your server’s public IPv4 address from the server’s detail page in the portal.

If you’re using a command line, do this from your ssh directory ( in our case that’s ~/.ssh/):

ssh -i id_rsa root@[ you server’s public IPv4]

ssh root@147.75.105.215
